Easy cabbage fritters with cottage cheese are an ideal low carb dish for any time of the year. A simple low carb and gluten-free recipe with a mixture of savory and creamy. The cabbage provides freshness and light sweetness, while the cottage cheese adds a creamy and slightly tangy element.

The fritters typically have a crispy exterior due to frying, while the interior remains soft and slightly creamy because of the cottage cheese.

  • Cabbage - thinly sliced green cabbage. White cabbage could be used too.
  • Cottage cheese - ricotta cheese could be substituted. Grated Cheddar cheese works too.
  • Almond Flour - if you replace this with coconut flour, you may need to reduce the quantity. Try ¼ cup and add more if required to bind a patty.

Can you bake the cabbage fritters instead of frying?

If you prefer to bake the fritters, place them on a parchment paper lined baking tray and bake for 20 to 25 minutes at 200C/400F degrees. Turn over half way through cooking for an even color.

Storage

Any leftover cabbage fritters should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge. They will last up to 3 days. Reheat in a pan, microwave or air fryer for a minute or two.

These do not freeze well and it's not recommended.

Cabbage Fritter Variations

These cabbage fritters are very customizable. A few recipe variation suggestions are:

  1. Spicy Cabbage Cottage Cheese Fritters: Add some heat by incorporating finely chopped jalapeños, red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper into the batter. You can also serve them with a spicy dipping sauce for an extra kick.
  2. Herb and Garlic Cabbage Cottage Cheese Fritters: Enhance the flavor with fresh herbs like cilantro, parsley, or dill and minced garlic. The herbs add a refreshing element to the fritters.
  3. Cheesy Cabbage Cottage Cheese Fritters: Besides cottage cheese, mix in grated cheddar, mozzarella or Parmesan cheese for an extra cheesy twist. The combination of two cheeses adds a rich and indulgent flavor.
  4. Indian-Style Cabbage Paneer Fritters: Infuse Indian flavors by adding spices like garam masala, coriander powder and cumin seeds to the batter. Serve with mint chutney or tamarind sauce for an authentic taste.
  5. Vegan Cabbage Cottage Cheese Fritters: For a dairy-free version, replace cottage cheese with a plant-based alternative like tofu.
  6. Cabbage Cottage Cheese Fritter Sliders: Serve the fritters as mini sliders by placing them inside small burger buns along with your favorite condiments and veggies.

What to serve with cabbage fritters

Low-carb cabbage cottage cheese fritters can be paired with a variety of side dishes and accompaniments to create a satisfying and balanced meal. Here are some ideas:

  • Greek Tzatziki Sauce: A refreshing cucumber yogurt sauce with garlic and dill complements the fritters beautifully. It adds a creamy and tangy element to your meal.
  • Avocado Salsa: Prepare a simple salsa using diced avocado, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, lime juice, and a touch of salt. The creamy avocado balances the fritters' crunchiness.
  • Mixed Greens Salad: A fresh salad with mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and a light vinaigrette dressing provides a refreshing contrast to the fritters.
  • Pickles or Kimchi: The tanginess of pickles or kimchi can cut through the richness of the fritters and add a burst of flavor to your plate.
  • Guacamole: A classic guacamole made with ripe avocados, onions, tomatoes, lime juice, and spices is a fantastic dip for your fritters.
  • Grilled Vegetables: Grilled bell peppers, eggplant, or mushrooms can be served alongside the fritters for a smoky flavor.
  • Low-Carb Coleslaw: Create a low-carb coleslaw with shredded cabbage, a creamy dressing made with Greek yogurt or mayonnaise, and vinegar for tanginess.
  • Zucchini Noodles: Spiralize some zucchini to create noodles and sauté them with a little garlic and olive oil. They make a great low-carb pasta substitute.
  • Sour Cream or Greek Yogurt: A dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt can add creaminess and a cooling effect to your meal.
