Why doesn't my DVD picture fill the screen? ›

Most current films have an aspect ratio 2.35:1. Many recent theatrical releases distributed on DVD and labeled as "widescreen" retain this very wide aspect ratio. Because the image of these movies is wider than a widescreen TV, your home theater places black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

Ensure that the disc has been inserted into the player correctly. Examine the DVD for fingerprints, smudges, or scratches and, if necessary, clean the disc using a soft dry cloth. Ensure the disc has been properly created and finalized. Ensure the DVD region code and format of the disc is compatible with the player.

Screen format

You should find a button titled format, picture or picture size. However, if you're unable to find this button, try the menu button. Go to the setup of the TV display. In here, there should be an option to change your layout from wide to full.

DVD players will display on one of the Input or Auxiliary channels. They will not show up on Channel 3 or 4 like some VCRs. Some TVs will label the Input channels based on the type of input, such as "HDMI", "AV", and "COMPONENT." Refer back to Method one if you have a question about which input type you are using.

Your DVD player SETUP menu

Quite often we see a setting labelled as “VIEW MODE” … check what option for this is set… you may see it defaults to a setting such as “AUTO FIT”. This means the DVD player is going to stretch the image to fit your TV screen if the aspect ratios don't match.

Using your TV remote, try to zoom in order to get that full and widescreen. Also, set your TV aspect ratio to 16:9. After doing these adjustments with your television, try to adjust the cable set-up box. The most likely reason can be that the DVD itself is recorded in the aspect ratio in which it is being shown to you.

Ensure no discs are playing in the DVD player. On the DVD remote control, press the UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW button to select the SETUP icon. Press the ENTER button. Press the UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW button to select RESET .

The DVD player or drive has a region code in its firmware. Personal computer DVD-ROM players often have the code in the software or MPEG-2 decoder. The two codes must match for the player or drive to play the movie. The code is also printed on the back of a DVD package, superimposed on a small image of the globe.

Black bars fill in the space above and below the image. This is widescreen. The image is a little smaller (unless you have a big screen TV) but - and this is vitally important - you are seeing the exact same image you'd see in the theater. Unlike fullscreen, no part of the picture is lost.

With the widescreen they cut out portions of the top and bottom of a film and the fullscreen version cuts out the sides.

But these days most “serious” DVDs—everything from The Godfather toMcCabe & Mrs. Miller to 8½—are issued only in widescreen. And more and more, studios release popcorn fare like Pirates of the Caribbean exclusively in widescreen format, too.

Yes, you can connect an old DVD player to a new TV as long as your DVD player and TV have either HDMI ports or audio and video ports. Some old DVD players have both so you shouldn't have any problem hooking it up with your new TV.

Make sure the DVD player and the TV is connected securely at both ends. If your TV has multiple inputs, switch to other inputs to see whether the issue is fixed. Try a different cable or a port. If you connect your DVD player to the TV with an HDMI cable, you need to find the correct source on the TV.

Press Menu button on remote control and select Picture > Picture Size. There are several options: 16:9, Wide Zoom, Zoom, 4:3, Screen Fit, Smart View 1 and Smart View 2. Select the most appropriate one.
